Mahadanapuram in Karur District is a beautiful village on the banks of river Cauveri. Historically this place got it’s prominence from emperor Krishnadeva Rayar who camped in the nearby place which is today known as Krishnarayapuram. Krishnadeva Rayar created this village and gifted land houses to Vedic scholars to involve in teaching of Vedas and perform various Yagas and Yagnas. Thus this place got it’s name as Mahadanapuram. (The village of great gift). Four Sanyasins of the Nilamavu Mutt of Karnataka attained Samadhi at this place and their Adhishtana Mantapas are being looked after well with daily Poojas. A Pathasala is also functioning at this place.

Mahadanapuram is remembered as the favourite dwelling place of Bhashyam Swamigal who lived here for 40 years speaking only in Samskritam. Sri Bhashyam Swamigal had the great fortune of learning the Vedanta and Sankara Bhashyams from Sri Chandrasekharabharati Swamigal the 34th Acharya of Sringeri Sarada Peetham. Later he had the privilege of being the Samskritam instructor of Sri Abhinava Vidyatheertha Swamigal in their Poorvasrama. When he was blessed by Sri Chandrasekharabharati Swamigal to accept Sanyasa, he was asked by the Jagadguru to speak only in Samskritam. Sri Bhashyam Swamigal, whose Deekshanam was Satchidananda Theertha, kept his word and spoke in Samskritam to all people he interacted and even trained Children to speak in Samskritam and enact Dramas and skits.

When Samskrita Bharati wanted to start a Training Centre, after searching for a suitable places in vain at various places, we were directed by divine will to Mahadanapuram. After learning about Sri Bhashyam Swamigal we were convinced that it was the will of Goddess Sarada and we decided to honor the name of the great saint by naming our training centre as BHASHYAM which is also the name of one of the branches of learning in Samskritam.

Apart from the project cost there is an annual running cost of around 30 Lakhs. Since Samskrita Bharati is a Non- Governmental voluntary movement, the entire expenses have to be met from the contributions from large hearted philanthropists and Samskritam loving people. As this is a continuing project with further expansion any amount of contribution to realise and sustain the venture is welcome.
